Located on Sturt Street in central Ballarat, this project involved the revitalisation of a first-floor residential apartment above a ground-level retail space, which had fallen into significant disrepair. Like many properties along this iconic street, the apartment had been vacant for several years and required substantial attention to restore its liveability and charm.
The primary challenge for this renovation centred around balancing the building’s heritage requirements with modern fire safety regulations. Maintaining the historical integrity of the structure was a priority, so the approach was to make thoughtful, minor interior alterations while incorporating a small but distinctive extension to the rear of the building.
The rear extension became an opportunity to push creative boundaries. In collaboration with the client, the design embraced a unique and contemporary element, providing a striking contrast to the building’s historic character, while enhancing functionality and aesthetics. The result is a respectful yet innovative rejuvenation of a once-forgotten space, breathing new life into a heritage asset.
